Martins Ferry Celebrates Veterans’ Day

The City of Martins Ferry invites all Ohio Valley residents to join us in honoring our veterans by attending a parade and?ceremony in City Park on Saturday November 10th.???

The parade will begin at 11am at the Liberty Fire Station and proceed south on Zane Highway?then east on?Hanover Street and south on 4th Street before ending at City Park via Grant Avenue.

Immediately following the parade will be a ceremony in City Park with special guest speaker: Bronze Star and Presidential Citation recipient Sergeant Major Lee Bonar Jr. of the United States Marine Corps.?

The ceremony will also mark the addition of a?fallen hero?to the WWII Monument as well as new additions to the City Park Fountain denoting?our nation’s wars and the heroes who served.???

After the ceremony, the American Legion Post 38 will?have lunch available.???

Trick or Treat

Martins Ferry Trick or Treat has been postponed until Friday November 2nd from 6pm-7pm.? Weather conditions from Hurricane Sandy have forced this change.

Participating residents are asked to turn on porch lights during this event.

 


Date Set for Fall Cleanup

Service Director Chuck Bennett has announced Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday October 20th from 8am until Noon at the City Garage?located at Center and?First Streets.?? All participants are required to show?proof of residency.

This year’s cleanup will include electronics recycling.? In partnership with Electronics Recycling Services, the City will accept the following items:

  • LCD Monitors/CRT-TV?s
  • Printers
  • Scanner products
  • Digital Cameras
  • PDA/Handheld devices
  • Cell Phones
  • Servers / Switches
  • Computers / Laptops
  • Dry-Sealed Rechargeable Batteries
  • Uninterruptible Power Supplies
  • DVR/VCR
  • CD Rom/DVD/CDRW
  • Electronic devices
  • Industrial switching
  • Medical Devices
  • POS equipment
  • Electronic Components
  • Media
  • Phone Systems
  • Cabling

Chamber of Commerce Sponsors ‘Meet the Candidates Night’

Citizens of Martins Ferry and the surrounding communities are invited to attend ‘Meet the Candidates’ on October 16th at 7 pm.? The event will take place in the Martins Ferry High School Cafetorium and is free to the public.

‘Meet the Candidates’?is an excellent opportunity for voters to?learn more?regarding candidates in several races including Belmont County Sheriff, Belmont County Commissioner, and? Judge as well as?State and Federal?contests.? Representatives?for?the Belmont County 911 and Senior Services levy issues have also been invited to attend.

City Leases Mineral Rights

The good news continues?for the City of Martins Ferry.??Mayor Paul?Riethmiller?announced?during the September 19th Council Meeting that the City had entered into an agreement with XTO Energy to lease 147 acres of property.? The?initial proceeds from this agreement total more than $729,000.?

The Mayor also took?the opportunity to credit Councilman Russell Armstrong for his work in beginning the process as well as Attorney Ed Sustersic?and Mr. Charles Bell Jr. for?helping to facilitate this agreement.?

The initial proceeds?could be?just the beginning of a long-term?windfall for the City.??When the well is drilled and producing royalty checks would come?to the City on a monthly basis.? As County Auditor Andy Sutak said, “It’s the tip of the iceberg…a great thing for the City.”??????


Fire Department Celebrates 125 Years

A host of state and local?officials joined members of the Martins Ferry Volunteer Fire Department?at a dinner marking the 125th anniversary of the organization.??Members were praised for their continuing commitment to volunteerism and service?for the protection of the community.

Past and Current Fire Chiefs with Chief Leaming (center)

Chief Jack Regis Jr.?and Assistant Chief Mike Reese accepted proclamations on behalf of the department from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, State Representative Jack Cera, and State?Senator Lou Gentile as well as from the Belmont County Commissioners.? Each official who spoke noted the importance of volunteering and serving the community.

Regis Jr. and Reese also?recognized?all?active Martins Ferry firefighters including those with over 30 years of service.??Additionally, many past Martins Ferry Fire Chiefs were on hand to be recognized and honored.

Noting the difficulties facing the dwindling number of volunteer departments, Chief Jeff Leaming from the State Fire Marshal’s office stated, “The fires are just as hot, they burn just as fast, and the dangers are just as high?regardless of?whether or not the firefighter is paid or volunteers.? We are all brothers and sisters in service to our community.”


Sanitation Schedule Change for Labor Day Holiday

In observance of Labor Day this Monday September 3rd?all City offices will be closed.? As a result there is a schedule change for sanitation pickup.? Citizens?who normally have pickup on Monday will?instead be picked up on Tuesday.??For all other citizens?the daily schedule will remain?the same although the time of day?for pickup may change slightly.? ??

City Twitter Account Keeps Citizens Informed

Ferrians have yet another way to stay up to date with their City.? By signing up for a free?account at www.twitter.com?and following @CityofMF, information such as water breaks, traffic problems, emergency situations, and more can be sent to?personal computers or mobile devices?immediately.?

“This is a great way?to reach citizens immediately with important information. From a safety standpoint?that can be crucial,” stated?Safety Director Bill Suto.???

“It’s also a way for citizens to stay in touch with what’s happening in their community.? Public events, meetings, and even some fun, historical facts about Martins Ferry will be?tweeted,” commented Councilman at Large Chris Cleary.

A number of citizens have already taken advantage of this service and it’s expected to continue to grow as word spreads.

 


City-Wide Crime Watch Meeting Set

During the City Council Meeting?on August 15th, Councilman Bob Krajnyak announced the date of a city-wide Crime Watch meeting.? The meeting will take place on Saturday September 22 at 6pm?in the American Legion Hall on South Zane Highway.? All citizens are?encouraged to attend.

The Crime Watch program?has been?managed?by Sgt. Beth Scales of the Martins Ferry Police Department as a way to empower citizens with information regarding recognizing and reporting suspicious activities.? It is an excellent way for people to get involved in making their community a better, safer place in which to live.

Betty Zane Days Are Here

The Martins Ferry Betty Zane Days Festival sponsored by the Volunteer Fire Department is an annual event celebrating the heroine of Fort Henry (now Wheeling, West Virginia).

The Festival kicks off on Tuesday August 7th and features five days of entertainment, food, and carnival rides along with a Mushball Tournament (including a special game between the Police Department and Fire Department), and a parade on Saturday with an area fire department “water battle” to follow.

Pre-sale tickets for the carnival rides may be purchased at the City Building or Chamber of Commerce no later than Tuesday at 3pm.?
