City Needs Help Placing Flags in Cemetery

The City is looking for volunteers to help with the placement of flags on Veteran’s graves at Riverview Cemetery on Monday May 20th at 3pm. ?Anyone wishing to help is asked to meet at the top of the cemetery at that time. ?

The flags will remain in the cemetery through the 4th of July.

Crime Watch Update Meeting Slated

A Crime Watch Meeting will be held on Wednesday June 12th at 6pm in the American Legion Post 38 meeting hall. ?This meeting will update citizens on current areas of concern in the city and ways to help the police protect our neighborhoods.

Citizens are encouraged to become actively involved in this program by joining with neighbors and forming groups to share information about suspicious activities on their street. ?This meeting will review ways to take action and make our city safer.

Second Annual Community Cleanup Day Set

City leaders are asking all citizens, local businesses, and community groups to “Pitch In” and help cleanup litter throughout the city. ?Anyone willing to help make their community a better place is asked to meet at the Martins Ferry City Park pavilion on Saturday June 15th at 9am.

The event is funded by a grant from the JB Green Team and is sponsored in part by Aaron’s, The Times Leader, The Martins Ferry Lions Club, and The City of Martins Ferry.?

Groups will be dispersed to various sites around the city for cleanup and a reception will be held in the City Park after this event. ?

Hanover/Rt 7 Signal Work Begins May 20th

Updates are coming to the State Route 7 and Hanover Street intersection designed to make that area safer for motorists. ?The new signals will include red turning arrows and eliminate the solid green lights which allow drivers to turn after yielding to oncoming traffic.

Drivers using this area are asked to slow down and proceed with extreme caution while work is being performed. ?Drivers can also expect some delays in this area until work is completed. ?Police patrols will be present to enforce a high level of safety. ??

 


New Property Maintenance Codes Proposed

Over the past year, City Council’s Code Administration Committee has been working to update codes related to property maintenance.? For example, the fine for not adhering to city codes was increased to a maximum of $200 in 2012.?

This year the committee has recommended adopting the International Code Council?2012 International Property Maintenance Code.? This code is?enforced?in cities throughout?the state of Ohio as well as?in cities?across the?nation.?

The?first edition of the International Property Code in 1998 was the work of?the International Code Council made up of representatives of?BOCA, ICBO, and SBCCI.? A new edition of the code is published every three years.?

City Clean-up Day Set

Once again, Martins Ferry residents will have an opportunity to participate in a city-wide clean-up day.? On Saturday April 13th from 8 am to Noon, residents may bring items to the City Garage located at?First and Center Streets.

Proof of Martins Ferry residency (such as a driver’s license or utility bill) is required.

Items NOT accepted include but are not limited to: construction materials, roofing shingles, tires, chemicals, paints, concrete, plaster, bricks, or asbestos.?

Electronic items may be taken to the Martins Ferry High School for recycling on April 13th and 14th starting at 8 am.?Items accepted at the high school include?flat screen televisions, monitors, telephones, radios, etc.? No tube televisions will be accepted.?

Council Meeting Date Changed

The City Council Meeting previously scheduled for Wednesday March 20th at 6pm has been rescheduled.? The?meeting will?instead be held on Monday March 25th at?5:30pm in the Donald Myers Council Chambers located on the second floor of the City Building.?

 


City Park Egg Hunt Set

Final preparations are being made for the 2nd Annual City Easter Egg Hunt.? The event will take place on Saturday March 23rd?from Noon until 2pm and is open to all Martins Ferry children ages 1 to 10.?

Hot Dogs and refreshments will be available for the children along with prizes and?a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Vineway Changing to One-Way

Beginning on Monday March 18th, a portion of Vineway Street (beginning at?the 1001 address)?will be made one-way going down the hill from Crawford Heights to Terrace Street.

This change is necessary for safety reasons.? Signs have already been posted on the road?announcing the change.
